We're excited to announce a new series of articles and content specially designed to help you learn more about rail travel including Amtrak's benefits, routes, destinations, history and more! We're calling it #AmtrakHowTo! 

Follow along for more content covering all points of your journey.  Whether you're new to the rails or a veteran rider, there's a lot to know about America's railroad.  Created by Congress in 1970, the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, or Amtrak, offers efficient, effective intercity passenger rail across the country.  

  • Amtrak has been operational since 1971 
  • We cover 21,000 route miles. 
  • Our network reaches 500+ destinations in 46 states, Washington DC and 3 Canadian provinces. 
  • On a typical day over 300 trains help customers take more than 89,000 trips. 
  • Some trains reach speeds of up to 150 miles per hour. 
  • In 2019 Amtrak customers took 32.5 million trips. 
  • In 2021 we’re rolling out 28 new Acela trainsets and 75 new clean diesel locomotives. 
  • Over the last 20 years, we’ve reduced our emissions by more than 20%
